I chose to become a psychiatrist because another psychiatrist inspired me while I was completing a psychiatry rotation during medical school. Up until then, the specialty was low on my list of interests. My mentor at Duke University was smart and personable. I saw people get well. I realized the field could be as mentally challenging as any other medical specialty I had seen.

My typical workday includes caring for patients, conducting research studies, preparing manuscripts for publication, and performing administrative duties.
Clinical Research Topics
- Alcoholism – I am interested in discovering why some people will stop drinking in a social situation while others will not.
- Domestic Violence – With this project, I am trying to understand domestic violence. I want to describe its many aspects, including the links between behavior and the physiology of the brain and its chemical pathways. Likewise, I hope to develop diagnostic tools to identify people who may have domestic violence behavioral tendencies. To do this, I develop protocols that allow me to interact with people who initiate acts of domestic violence. These protocols involve laboratory and clinical tests such as examining spinal fluid, genetic studies, PET (positron emission tomography) scans, and functional MRIs (magnetic nuclear resonance imaging). I can compare this patient information with data from individuals who do not engage in acts of domestic violence.
Major Tasks
- Talking to patients (every time I talk with a patient I learn something new).
- Collaborating with other clinical and laboratory professionals.
- Reading current research publications to stay up-to-date.
